January 2019 SGNScoops Magazine: Editor’s Last Word

By Lorraine Walker

Happy New Year! As we head into the month of January, I hope that you had a lovely Christmas season and were able to reunite with family, friends and loved ones. For those that had an empty chair this year, our hearts grieve with you. For those that added an extra space, we rejoice. You never know what is ahead for the next 12 months, but one thing is for sure: God does.

God knew what he was doing when he gave the Wisecarvers their talent and the desire to use their gifts for him. What a great example of the many family groups that have begun to really shine in the last few years. If you haven’t had a chance to hear them, you need to seek them out and listen to their music. We were thrilled that Dixie Phillips had time to chat with this family and to share their story in SGNScoops. Congratulations to the Wisecarvers for being our first cover story for 2019!

You will find the thread of family throughout this magazine, as I’m sure you have noted by now. Westward Road, Endless Highway, the Rochesters, and even Charlie Griffin’s feature – an abbreviated version of the history of Southern gospel music – emphasizes the role that family harmony plays in all genres, but especially in gospel music. For many of us are not blood relatives as such, but we are family because we believe in the saving power of the blood of Jesus Christ. One of our lessons, while we are here, is to learn to love each other. I pray that this year, I will find ways to show love, caring, and appreciation for fellow believers. Will you join me?

Lorraine Walker

Lorraine Walker, editor of SGNScoops

As we turn the page to a new month, new year, new calendar, many people make goals and lists of how they will grow or improve in the upcoming weeks. I’d rather pray that the Lord will help me draw closer to him. But I also have to admit that I have a sinking feeling when people mention resolutions. When I look at some of the years gone by, I know that those resolutions have also gone by the wayside. Some have been shelved and others have just stalled. Do you ever feel that way?

May I encourage you, as I am trying to encourage myself now, to find your hope, peace, and joy in the Lord? He tells us that if we believe that he is our source of strength, then he will be what we need to hit that resume button on goals or plans to use everything he has given to us to be able to mature into the person that can serve him with excellence. Whether that means you become healthier in body, mind or spirit, or whether you expand your knowledge of the Lord and his word, or whatever he has given you to do this year – you can do it. The Lord will enable you to do what he has asked you to do. Find out what that is. Let’s grow together in 2019.

Change For 3rd Row Boys

Change For 3rd Row Boys

Change For 3rd Row Boys

Throughout the history of 3RB, God has orchestrated some very interesting and wonderful changes. About 3 years ago when we decided to venture into the world of southern gospel radio, little did we know what God would reveal to us! He has blessed us so richly since then, and has opened doors to many new opportunities and experiences. We’ve met so many new people and been able to sing in some truly memorable places! We’ve even had our very first top 40 song! God is good!! We know that there are even more wonderful things in store and we are excited to see them happen!

One thing in store for us is another change. After almost 5 years of singing with 3RB, Josh Ranke has decided it is time for him to step down. As many of you know, he and his beautiful wife Katie just welcomed their first child Alexis in October after a very tedious pregnancy. God blessed them with a beautiful and healthy baby girl, and their story has become a very powerful testimony in our concerts. However, it also was the beginning of God revealing new plans that He has in store for Josh and Katie. For those of you who know Josh well, you know he has a HUGE heart for ministry and seeing souls saved. So much so, that he is willing to sacrifice anything to see people come to Christ, especially youth. With the increased reach and travel of 3RB, Josh feels he needs to step away in order to have time to move into other areas of ministry that God is presenting to him. We love Josh and Katie so much and know that they are truly following God’s leading. We will miss them dearly, but we can’t wait to see what’s in store for them as well as 3RB!

So now we are preparing for our next chapter. We are starting our search immediately but are VERY thankful that Josh has decided to stay on board until we find a new vocalist. He feels very adamant about the future of 3RB and wants to make sure we have plenty of time to find the right man to take his place. We are very grateful for Josh staying on board until then because we want to make sure we find the perfect fit! With that being said, we will be holding auditions over the next few months as we anticipate an exciting new season for 3RB! If you or someone you know is interested and feel would be a good fit for our group, please send us an MP3 or video of you singing, along with a pic and brief history of your ministry experience. Please email it all to and we will be in touch with you if we’d like to know more and set up an audition. We have some exciting times ahead of us and can’t wait to see who God has in store for it all!

Thank you all for your continued prayers, love and support! We do appreciate your prayers that we will be very God honoring in our search for a new vocalist, and that our hearts will be patient for that man that He has planned for us. In the meantime, if we are in your area soon, please be sure to join us so you can see Josh and give him well wishes for his bright future! God bless you all!

Pray For Josh Townsend

From Legacy Five

Would y’all please say a prayer for JT? After our concert tonight, while loading our equipment, he had another seizure. We called for an ambulance, the EMT checked him out and said that he is ok to travel the 5 hours to Nashville. He has an appointment with his doctor first thing tomorrow. Let’s let him know we are praying for him and encourage him in the comments on this post.

Jason Crabb: Praying for a Revival of Love

Jason Crabb: Praying for a Revival of Love

Jason Crabb and his wife, Shellye, were married 20 years ago. After two decades, they have grown a family, observed twenty Christmas Eves, developed a thriving career in Christian music, and celebrated many awards, including Grammy, Dove, and Diamond.

Jason, along with his brothers and sisters, still makes limited appearances as the Crabb Family, 22 years following their first appearance, and get together as a family as often as possible.

This artist knows that the best things in life are the things that last. Things like faith, love and family. And gatherings during one of the most holiest times of the Christian calendar.

“We really like to get together with family,” says Jason about his Christmas traditions. “It’s just family time. The perfect Christmas for me, would be to go back home to Kentucky and spend it with my family. To go to one of those little bitty Christmas plays that the kids do, in one of those little country churches that I grew up in. Watch Mary drop the baby Jesus doll in the manger scene. Those things you just never forget. You know, the main thing for me is Jesus and family during that time.”

Jason Crabb: Praying for a Revival of LoveThe Crabb family has been blessed with the ability to share their love for Jesus musically, and now Jason has started flexing his songwriting muscles on his latest award-winning release, “Unexpected.” Not every song on this recording is one he has written, however.

“The best song always wins, doesn’t matter if you wrote it or whoever else,” Jason states. “But how can we get up and say ‘this is me,’ if we didn’t have any part of the creation? I didn’t think I had it in me to create it.

“So I’ve gotten wise,” Jason grins. “I’ve got people around me to help me, you know, get with writers, to get with people that are a great help to put all the pieces together of what I want to say, to glue it all together, make a great piece of artwork. Instead of one holding the brush, there’s three, and then the band comes along and there’s numerous people.

Riches and Poverty

Mark 10:22-31

A rich man came to Jesus seeking eternal life. There are some things that money can’t buy, and eternal life tops the list.

Eternal life is fellowship with God. A man cannot know the only true God until he forsakes every false god. This man’s money seems to have become his god, so Jesus called him to renouncethe idolatry of things in order to become a disciple. Unwilling to part with mammon, the rich man parted with Jesus and left His presence sorrowful.

Then, Jesus spoke to His followers, “How hard it will be for those who have riches to enter the Kingdom of God!” (v. 23). Peter replies, “We have left everything and followed you,” so Jesus assures him that true discipleship brings great rewards in this life and the next.

Let’s notice two things about this passage.

First, Jesus warns of riches that impoverish. Those who have riches will find it hard to enter the kingdom of God. These words caused the disciples to be amazed. The had the mistaken notion that wealth was evidence of God’s favor. God must love a man greatly to bless him so abundantly – so they reasoned.

The way of salvation which has been made by Jesus can only be entered by those who disavow their false gods – who forsake their trust in riches. If a man clings to his riches, saying no to the invitation of Christ, then his riches will impoverish and rob him of the only enduring wealth – that fellowship with God in Christ which is eternal life. Anything that would keep you from following Jesus is not worth the bargain. Riches can impoverish. The unsaved man is a pauper, whatever his bank balance!

On the other hand, Jesus speaks of a poverty that enriches. Whatever it costs to be a disciple of Jesus, the gains are far greater than the losses. What we receive is so much more than what we give.

Eternal life in the Father’s house, eternal fellowship with Jesus is the wealth that endures. There are riches that impoverish, but there is poverty that enriches. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3).

We must renounce our trust in things, to become poor in spirit, to recognize our dependence upon the mercy of God!

Please Pray For Douglas Roark during recovery from surgery

Please Pray For Douglas Roark during recovery from surgery

Arden, North Carolina  — The Old Paths are requesting prayers for baritone and founding member, Douglas Roark, who had open-heart surgery today.

Over the past few weeks, Douglas noticed during times of exertion, he had tightness in his chest and shortness of breath accompanied by a spell of lightheadedness. Thinking it was just a blood pressure issue, he scheduled an appointment with a primary care physician. This led to an appointment with a cardiologist, and because of his family history, he had a series of tests that showed a hereditary cardiovascular disease with the need of bypass surgery.

The surgery was scheduled for today, Valentine’s Day, at 6:45 a.m. and as of 11:30 a.m. Doug was out of surgery, and the doctors said everything went great. As Doug would say, “Love y’all! And we covet your prayers at this time.” Please be in prayer for Doug, Andrea and his family in the weeks of recovery that will follow.

The Old Paths will continue with their full-time schedule with Jeremy Chupp filling in at baritone. Many fans will remember him running sound and playing drums for The Old Paths’ ministry through the years. They appreciate him and his family for stepping up and helping in such a major way during this time.

“Thank you all for your support during this time, and we can’t wait to have Doug back on the road with us!” says Tim Rackley, The Old Paths’ lead singer.

Jeff and Ed Harper of The Harper Agency, which books The Old Paths, said they’re also looking forward to Doug returning after his recovery.

“Ed and myself were quite surprised to hear the news about Doug, and we are so pleased that all the prayers were answered!” says Jeff Harper. “We all know this is not what Doug had on his bucket list. We will continue to keep Doug and all his family in our prayers, knowing he will be back on the road as soon as he can after doctors release him after recovery. In the meantime, please go out and support The Old Paths as they continue to travel. This is what Doug would want during his recovery, and he will see you on the next run through.”

If you would like to send personal messages to Doug and Andrea, email We will keep everyone updated on Doug’s condition.
